No. 5 – Mont Blanc, France

Mont Blanc by Jonathan Chapman

No. 5 of my 2018 world series challenge is Mont Blanc, France.

Mont Blanc (or Monte Bianco in Italian) meaning “White Mountain”, is the highest mountain in the Alps and the highest in Europe. It rises 4,808 m above sea level. The mountain stays in a range called the Graian Alps, between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Savoie and Haute-Savoie, France. The location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the valleys of Montjoie, and Arve in France. The Mont Blanc massif is popular for hiking, skiing, and snowboarding.

The illustration is 29 x 29cm created with acrylic and ink on acrylic paper. I had my first taste of skiing only a few years ago and would love the opportunity to try some more (although many more lessons would be required!). It would be wonderful to visit one of the areas around this mountain, such as Chamonix which I used as reference for this painting. Mont Blanc is such a tremendous natural monument too… it feels like one of the true hearts of Europe and i’ve seen it’s peak form great distances and quite a few plane windows. I look forward to one day seeing it’s dramatic slopes up close.
